By nights and weekends, I’m an amateur photographer, musician and cyclist, although not necessarily in that order. My passion for each and a few other hobbies tends to shift around a bit. As for photography, I started getting interested back in 1999 when I spent a three month work placement in wonderful Australia, I just wanted something to document the trip. At the time, digital cameras had just emerged and the popular choice at the local camera store was a Kodak model with a whopping 1 megapixel sensor. After some deliberation, I figured the technology still had a ways to go and finally opted for the safe bet and picked up the Canon EOS 300 film SLR (for about the same price). Fast forward about 4 years and digital cameras had come along way, prices where reasonable and the technological improvements had stabilized – at least for point and shoot. This time I picked up the Canon A70 with a respectable 3.2 megapixels. As you can probably tell, I have a thing for Canon. Moving forward another three years and consumer level DSLR’s have finally made their mark starting with the Rebel 300D, 350D and the 20D models. When Canon recently announced an upgrade to their popular 20D model, I knew it was time again to make the plunge and I bought the 30D model (wonderful camera).

Nuri Bilge Ceylan is photographer and film director. Ceylan learned photography at age 15, and developed an interest in film at 22.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan is widely recognised as one of the finest and most distinctive writer-directors to have emerged on to the international filmmaking scene in the last decade; he has won important prizes at numerous festivals, including major awards in Cannes for both Uzak (Distant) and Iklimer (Climates).

That Ceylan also takes photos should, perhaps, come as no surprise, since both those films include scenes of photographers at work; moreover, all his films – most of them shot by Ceylan himself – are notable for their visual precision, poetic eloquence and limpid beauty.

He says ;

I am a commercial photographer living in Los Angeles. I was born in 1979 and grew up in San Diego. My love of photography has evolved over the years, and now seems to have branched out to the extreme sides of the spectrum. On one hand, I love doing big, epic digital composites. The possibilities are endless, as are the hours spent on it. It’s an obsession, really.

On the other hand, I yearn for being outside, away from the computer, no lighting equipment, getting back to the kind of photography that got me started in the first place – shooting B/W film. Shooting with such limitations is very liberating.

Either way, as I move forward, I want to focus more and more on telling stories, not only with photographs, but with films as well. I love what I do!
